Holiday Matinee is an indie-minded, San Diego-based marketing and promotions company that's done work for everyone from Death Cab for Cutie to the San Diego Padres. Composed on Bicycles is the third volume of its compilation series; it brings together work from both clients and pals. There's some great stuff here. Up-and-comers like Reubens Accomplice and Maquiladora contribute inventive takes on brash, heartfelt indie rock and drifting, expansive Americana, respectively, while vets Superdrag put in the straightforward alt-rock of "I Can't Wait" and the Jealous Sound tingling emo hearts with "Bitter Strings." Dntel takes the comp into indie electronic territory with the glitchy "(This Is the Dream) of Evan + Chan"; Rocky Votolato's "Crabtree and Evelyn" is a clever, gorgeous piece of singer/songwriter-y acoustic jangle; and the Gloria Record's "Good Morning, Providence" is a swirling masterpiece of melody. Strong work also appears from Ill Ease, the Dropscience, the And/Ors, Aberdeen, and Track Star. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide
