    All Music Guide Review

Although there's no outstanding theme or concept to this collection of 1960s hit rock singles, it's of superior quality from several angles. There's good value (18 songs), fidelity, and decent liner notes about each song. For those who want the popular stuff, this also comes through on that score, with all but one of the songs having made the Top Ten (and the one that didn't, Shades of Blue's "Oh How Happy," came close, making #12) and eight having gone to the very top. And there's diversity: pop/rock (the Tokens' "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," Gene Pitney's "It Hurts to Be in Love," the Vogues' "You're the One," the Turtles' "Happy Together"), British Invasion (the Zombies' "Time of the Season," the Yardbirds' "For Your Love"), soul (Freda Payne's "Band of Gold," the Box Tops' "The Letter"), girl group (the Chiffons' "He's So Fine," the Dixie Cups' "Chapel of Love"), bubblegum (the Archies' "Sugar, Sugar"), and garage bands (the McCoys' "Hang on Sloopy," the Kingsmen's over-anthologized "Louie Louie," the Rivieras' "California Sun"). If you're the kind of driver who likes to play the oldies station in the car, but can't stand all the commercials and know enough about the music to know that these stations usually aren't programmed as well as they could be, this is one for your vehicle's CD player. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
