    While the history of female jazz artists still needs extensive documentation, this 1989 two-disc set goes a long way toward correcting oversights, noting and citing pivotal performers and showing that women have occupied roles in the music besides singers. It begins with pianist Lovie Austin and continues to Hazel Scott, with cuts from vital, underrecorded players such as guitarist Mary Osborne, pianist Beryl Booker, and trombonist Melba Liston. Certainly not every worthy female jazz artist could be included on one two-disc sampler, but this 44-cut package ranks as a fine start in documenting contributions from women instrumentalists. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide
