    All Music Guide Review

From the start of her career, Ethel Waters was one of the most accomplished jazz singers on record. This Biograph LP (the second of two) offers proof for it contains her very first session and, with one exception (a previously unissued version of "One Sweet Letter from You" from 1927), sticks to the 1921-24 period. The recording quality is a bit primitive and the backup work (except for brief appearances by cornetists Joe Smith and Tommy Ladnier) is forgettable but Waters's smooth and appealing voice cuts through the years. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
