Soundtracks are often uneven, disjointed affairs that don't mean much if you've never seen a particular film. There are many exceptions, of course -- the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, for example, is great whether or not you've seen the movie. But the soundtrack to the 1990 film Wild Orchid (starring Mickey Rourke and Jacqueline Bisset) is definitely uneven. What makes this CD is the fact that it is dominated by world music, which isn't something you can say about many soundtracks to American films. And it does contain some gems here and there, including Brazilian artist Margareth Menezes' hit "Elejibo" (a fine example of Afro-Bahian pop) and two selections by the acclaimed Jewish Yemenite singer Ofra Haza: "Love Song" and "I Want to Fly/Slave Dream." Equally impressive is Brazilian hero Naná Vasconcelos' vocal on the reggae-influenced "Bird Boy." ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
