Like his former group, the Geto Boys' material, Soldier is a mixed proposition, one that stunningly articulates the visceral realities of a disenfranchised existence only to juxtapose it with more no-brain, "dick-ho-bitch" posturing. And Willie D. never shies away from controversy. In "Rodney K" (full title "Fuck Rodney King"), he suggests King is more a complicit Uncle Tom than a symbol of America's institutionalized racism. Still, to place too much of the focus on that song -- as wrongheaded as it is -- would be doing Willie D. a disservice. The title track rips and snorts as good as anything by Ice Cube and Ice-T -- but, the women-hatred and gay-hate that imbue his inchoate sociology throw up new walls that need tearing down. ~ John Dougan, Option 49_93, Rovi
