    All Music Guide Review

    All of the CDs in the BBC Robert Parker series (which has been made available at times through different sources) contain remastered and sonically improved recordings from the early days of jazz. Unfortunately the 20 selections on this set are rather randomly programmed and, although this set has a few rare items (such as Richard M. Jones's "African Hunch," and The Mound City Blue Blowers' "What Do I Care What Somebody Said," and Omer Simeon's "Beau Koo Jack"), there are also many familiar recordings (including Jelly Roll Morton's "Sidewalk Blues," Frankie Trumbauer's "Singin' the Blues" and Earl Hines's "Maple Leaf Rag") that are easily available elsewhere. It's a good acquisition for newcomers to early jazz. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
