Oh, Split!'s subtitle is Great Break-Up Songs of the 60's. As part of Sony's Risky Business series of reissues in the early '90s, it should read Great Forgotten Break-Up Songs of the 60's because there are no hits and many of the artists were no-hit wonders. Even the artists like the Hollies, Del Shannon, and Paul Revere & the Raiders are represented by songs that weren't big for them. With compiler Dawn Eden at the helm, however, you know the quality is going to be the highest. Tracks like Lou Christie's explosive "Shake Hands and Walk Away Crying," Chad & Jeremy's dreamy-sad "I Won't Cry," the Magic Mushroom's snarling garage punk "I'm Gone," and the Grass Roots' aching "Things I Should Have Said" are truly lost classics. Every other song is wonderful too, making this a fun little package for collectors and fans of '60s music who want to go beyond the iron curtain of good-time oldies that rule the current radio waves. (Of special interest to sunshine pop fanatics are two rare Curt Boettcher productions: Jonathan Moore's "I Didn't Ever Know" and Ray Whitley's "Take Back Your Mind," which is an amazing production that ends up sounding like Mickey Newbury fronting the Beach Boys with a special appearance by the guy who plays old-timey jazz piano at Shakey's Pizza.) ~ Tim Sendra, All Music Guide
