Shadowlands boasts a luminous beauty and literary refinement well matched to the film's subject matter, the ill-starred relationship between British author and scholar C.S. Lewis and American poet Joy Greshman. George Fenton's score is romantic but never sappy, employing the London Symphony Orchestra and the Choir of Magdalen College to create a light classical suite that makes for pleasant if unchallenging listening. Fenton does a superior job of evoking the myriad facets of Lewis' identity. The music's classical leanings reflect his Oxford career, while the chorus and organ accompaniment at the core of themes like "Front Titles" summon up his conversion to Christianity. Still, too much of Shadowlands passes by without impact. It's lovely music, but it doesn't stick to the ribs. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
