These tracks were originally recorded during 1991 and 1992 in London when the group called itself the Galliano Project. They blended strident protest poetry and commentary with Afro-Latin and African rhythms, hard bop, jazz-rock, funk, and pop arrangements. The results were spectacularly uneven; some selections had riveting lyrics and exciting performances, while others were musically dreary, with rambling verse or unimpressive vocals. But the 14 songs presented here are noteworthy even when they fail, for they're a product of musicians and performers trying something inspiring and frustrating, risky and calculated. Their efforts deserve careful scrutiny, even if they don't always merit praise. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide
