While there is no doubt that Michael Ray and the Cosmic Krewe are indebted and pay tribute to Sun Ra and the Arkestra, they also inject a New Orleans funk/second line party vibe into their music. Ray not only played with Ra for 15 years, but also spent time in Kool and the Gang. On his initial release on Evidence Records, Ray obviously retained, learned, and built on those past experiences of showmanship, magic, and "art with a message." Among the ten tracks, three are pulled from the enormous body of work penned by Sun Ra: "Discipline 27," "Carefree," and "Island in Space." ~ Al Campbell, All Music Guide
