These 20 rare cuts, spanning 1961 to 1978, are frankly not so much lost grade-A soul as an exhumation of the CBS vaults. That's not to say soul collectors won't welcome this anthology; there are rare cuts from significant performers such as Don Covay, Howard Tate, Bobby Womack, Brenda & the Tabulations, Z.Z. Hill, Joe Tex, Mavis Staples, and Freddie Scott. Most of this is from the 1970s, dating from either just past or way past soul's heyday, and a good deal tends toward the slicker and softer side. But this is one for the serious soul specialist rather than the general soul fan; the tracks by Staples (a cover of "Crying in the Chapel") and the Drifters-like outing from 1961 by Don Covay are about the best. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
