All Music Guide Review
Time Life Music's Rock 'N' Roll Era: 1961 is a pretty good vintage, boasting rock & roll and Motown staples like "Lion Sleeps Tonight (Wimoweh)" by the Tokens, "Runaway" from Del Shannon, "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" by the Shirelles and "Stand by Me" from Ben E. King. Hidden gems such as Shannon's goofy "Hats Off to Larry" and Ernie K-Doe's "Mother-In-Law" help put this fine collection a step above the usual "oldies" anthologies, offering the listener an awfully big window into a year that saw popular music heading off in a myriad of different directions. ~ James Christopher Monger, All Music Guide
