Restless Country Soul is a real treat for longtime fans of Jason & the Scorchers. It led off the group's history in January 1982, one week after the Scorchers' live debut, in a jerry-rigged home studio with Jason Ringenberg singing in a hallway while the band set up in the living room. The five songs off that EP are followed here by five tracks cut at Sun Studios in Memphis, apparent outtakes from the Fervor album that have never before seen the light of day. The original Restless sides hold their own, but the Sun outtakes are a match for them. The group sounds tighter as they rip through a medley of "I'd Rather Die Young/Candy Kisses," do a completely straight "Pray for Me Momma (I'm a Gypsy Now)," and finish with maybe the best, raunchiest-sounding cover of a Carl Perkins song ever released, "Gone Gone Gone." And there's an uncredited bonus track to boot. As solid musically as any of their official albums. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
