All Music Guide Review

This six-song EP, Shriekback's first release, set the tone for their career but is nowhere near as accessible as some of their later material. A strange mixture of techno science and swamp voodoo, Tench exists in a little netherworld all its own. The tracks range from funky and only slightly bizarre ("Sexthinkone") to bizarre and only slightly funky ("Here Comes My Hand-Clap") and every step in between. It's not easy to find points of reference by which to describe the early Shriekback sound, but the most obvious touchstones are David Bowie and Brian Eno, and especially Bowie's Eno-produced Berlin period; throw in a little P-Funk and James Brown on the low end, and you begin to get the idea. ~ Bill Cassel, All Music Guide
