Charlie Johnson was never a major pianist, but he led one of the top New York-based jazz bands of the 1925-1930 period. All of the recordings by his groups, including ten alternate takes, are on this highly recommended CD. Among the more notable sidemen are altoist Benny Carter (making his recording debut in 1928), tenor saxophonist Benny Waters, the fiery and very exciting trumpeter Jabbo Smith, trombonists Charlie Irvis and Jimmy Harrison, trumpeters Thomas Morris and Sidney DeParis, and singer Monette Moore. Such classic performances as "Don't You Leave Me Here," "You Ain't the One," "Charleston Is the Best Dance After All," and "Walk That Thing" still sound exciting and make this an essential release for 1920s collectors. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
