Best of New York City: I'm Doin' Fine Now is the final word on this unfairly underrated band, who, despite their name and place of origin, created some of the finest Philly soul of the era. The opening number "I'm Doin' Fine Now" certainly stands as one of the great forgotten singles of the genre (and the '70s in general). Both of the band's albums -- 1973's I'm Doing Fine Now and 1974's Soulful Road -- are included in their entirety and the liner notes give a good overview of the band's career. Although nothing really can compete with the absolute brilliance of "I'm Doin' Fine Now," New York City's material was surprisingly strong on both albums, with standouts like "Make Me Twice the Man" and "Quick, Fast, in a Hurry." This collection is absolutely essential for any fan of '70s soul. ~ Chris Woodstra, All Music Guide
