The award for greatest sense of fun and playfulness goes to Spirit of '73: Rock for Choice, with proceeds benefitting the Rock for Choice Organization, founded in 1991 by rock band L7 and the Feminist Majority. The concept: 14 female performers from the 90s cover hit singles by female performers from the '70s. Those who merely mimic the originals aren't so memorable; count Babes in Toyland's "More More More," and Ebony Vibe Everlasting's "We Are Family," and Cassandra Wilson's "Killing Me Softly" in this category. Those who pizzazz their contributions with good cheer and irreverence fare considerably better: Eve's Plum dresses up Yvonne Elliman's 1978 hit "If I Can't Have You" in electrifying fashion; That Dog brightly buzz-pops its way through Maria Muldaur's "Midnight at the Oasis"; Melissa Ferrick nicely converts Roberta Flack's "Feel like Making Love" from moody soul to funky folk... ~ Roch Parisien, All Music Guide
