Pop Inside the '60s: 1963-1967 is the second volume in this series of rare British beat group recordings from the Decca and Deram catalogs. Many of the songs are obscurities by forgotten groups, but there are also a number of sought-after John Lennon/Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger/Keith Richard compositions, including the Applejacks' 1964 hit "Like Dreamers Do." Early recordings by artists who went on to greater fame are also well represented, with cuts by David Bowie ("The London Boys"), Joe Cocker ("I'll Cry Instead"), Rod Stewart ("Good Morning Little Schoolgirl"), and Lulu ("Surprise Surprise.") Most of the songs are energetic beat recordings of the sort associated with the Star Club and the first four Beatles' albums, including a great number of covers of classic American rock & roll hits. The Vernons Girls' novelty song "We Love the Beatles" and the girl group sound of Adrienne Posta's "Shang a Doo Lang" diverge from the prevailing style, but nevertheless fit in with the compilation's overarching thematic strains. The Pop Inside the '60s series is mainly directed at Beatles and Rolling Stones completists, and other serious collectors of beat groups interested in exploring the flop singles of the era. ~ Greg Adams, All Music Guide
