All Music Guide Review
Rhino continues on with their excavation of top soul hits from the '70s. This edition takes in 1971 with ten classics from the vaults of Stax, Motown, Atlantic, and Brunswick, among others. After starting off with two often unsung but amazing sides by Honey Cone ("Want Ads") and the Undisputed Truth ("Smiling Faces"), the mix hits the top of the pile with perennials by Aretha Franklin, Johnnie Taylor, the Chi-Lites, the Persuaders, and James Brown. And while the "Hot Pants" are coolin' down, you can join Rufus Thomas for one of his ever-pleasing dance grooves, "(Do the) Push and Pull, Pt. 1." A fine soul roundup best suited for casual listeners. ~ Stephen Cook, All Music Guide
