Blakeslee's an extremely gifted, Oregon-based trumpeter of a cantankerously lyrical free jazz persuasion. His concept leans heavily on tonal centers, it seems, even though the contexts of the blowing can become significantly atonal. He's an imaginative and original player of whom much more should be heard. Blakeslee's colleagues are all of a similar caliber; the multi-reedist Vinny Golia is, of course, one of the most dramatic improvisers extant, as is the lesser-known but prodigiously inventive pianist Tad Weed. On a number of occasions, as a soloist, Weed lifts the proceedings to extraordinary levels of excitement; he has a pronounced ability to pace, organize, and build upon his statements. Weed's feeling for spatial relationships and orchestral color adds much to the group sound, as well. Bassist Michael Bisio is not always favorably served by his recorded sound, which overemphasizes the darkness of his sound, but he is clearly a player of great empathy and musicality. The tuneful drummer Bob Meyer is also a nicely complementary presence. Overall, there's a nice group dynamic -- simultaneously cooperative and confrontational. This is an impressive document by a formidable group of young musicians. ~ Chris Kelsey, All Music Guide
