The first volume in the retrospective of early-'90s British hardcore -- a far different proposition than the music later known as hardcore -- features tracks from the style's two top labels, Suburban Base and Moving Shadow. The quick piano runs and sampled diva wails may remind listeners of the rave era, but the impeccable breakbeats on these tracks -- classics including "2 Bad Mice Take You" by Blame, "Mystic Stepper" by Omni Trio, "Weird Energy" by DJ Hype, "Thunder Grip" by Hyper On Experience -- show that hard British dance music had advanced far since the late '80s. Though it's not explicitly stated on the sleeve, Kenny Ken provides the mix. ~ Keith Farley, All Music Guide
