    All Music Guide Review

During the World War II years and for a period afterwards, many American musicians recorded "V-Discs," special sessions designed specifically for servicemen who were stationed overseas. Although the records were supposed to be eventually destroyed, many survived and some have been reissued through the years. For the first of three CDs put out by the Austrian RST label, there are 14 performances, some of them formerly rare. Jack Leonard sings "Honey" while joined by a top-notch swing all-star group, Hoagy Carmichael plays and sings "Riverboat Shuffle," the trios of Lennie Tristano and Nat King Cole have two numbers apiece and there are a couple of jams from all-star bands. Trummy Young, Joe Marsala, Roy Eldridge, Will Bradley and singer Connee Boswell all lead groups, an obscure band called the Catalina Sextette plays an Ellington tune and tenor-saxophonist Bud Freeman performs three selections. Two of Freeman's numbers ("For Musicians Only" and "The Latest Thing in Hot Jazz") are purposely humorous satires of the bebop vs. moldy fig war of the time with Freeman verbally introducing the hilariously cornball sounds as "ultramodern jazz music." This CD is highly recommended and the most consistently rewarding of the three in the valuable series. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
