Big Ones of Alternative Rock's song selection and sequencing illustrates the curious catchall quality of the genre in its initial mid-'90s form. Kicking off with White Zombie's throbbing "Thunder Kiss '65," Big Ones moves easily through Bush into the echoing dream pop of the Cranberries' "Dreams." The rowdy N.Y.C. punk revivalists in CIV are sandwiched between a wispy Juliana Hatfield number and the hokey Divinyls one-off "I Touch Myself." Elsewhere, Korn's "Blind" shares space with G. Love's "Cold Beverage," and Deadeye Dick's "New Age Girl" prompts fond memories of the Dumb & Dumber soundtrack. In the end, Big Ones of Alternative Rock is more of a weird relic than anything. But one thing's for sure: she don't eat meat, but she sure likes the bone. Hurrah! ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide
