Before Hill made his sensational 1980s comeback as a blues growler, he sang a slightly sweeter brand of West Coast soul during the mid-'60s at Kent. Under saxist Maxwell Davis's supervision, Hill waxed a series of magnificent R&B ballads -- "Happiness Is All I Need," "I Need Someone (To Love Me)" -- that should have hit but inexplicably didn't. Gathered on one 22-track import disc, they sound terrific in retrospect. ~ Bill Dahl, All Music Guide
