    All Music Guide Review

The Houdini's, a talented Dutch sextet, recorded fairly prolifically in the 1990s. Kickin' in the Front Window may very well be their best all-around set. As usual, the soloists (trumpeter Angelo Verploegen, altoist Rolf Delfos, and tenor saxophonist Boris Vanderlek) are excellent and quite personal, but what uplifts this set is the strong writing. The pieces not only feature catchy melodies, but the selections develop and evolve, being episodic and unpredictable. Among the better numbers are the heated up-tempo blues "Catch 22 Hot," the dramatic "Lulleman" (which boasts some expressive Miles Davis-influenced trumpet from Verploegen), the soulful blues "Fat Groupie" (which has some heated tenor from Vanderlek), a powerful trumpet feature on "I Fall in Love Too Easily," and a creative reworking of George Gershwin's "Gone." A superior set of modern straight-ahead jazz. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
