    Though the title implies that Smash Alternatives is a collection of early-'90s modern rock hits, the album is actually a cross-section of new wave classics by the likes Adam Ant, the Vapors, Madness, the Plimsouls, After the Fire, Soft Cell, Billy Idol, Thomas Dolby, the Damned, and the Fixx, among others. Smash Alternatives isn't as comprehensive as other new wave compilations, most notably the Just Can't Get Enough series, yet it contains many classic songs from that era -- including "Our House," "Der Kommisar," "White Wedding," "Goody Two Shoes," "She Blinded Me with Science," "Tainted Love" and "A Million Miles Away" -- which makes it worthwhile for listeners that just want a collection that features a handful of singles instead of a full-fledged retrospective. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
