Ghosts of Mississippi weaves Marc Shaiman's low-key, moody score through two versions of "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free" (one sung by Dionne Farris, the other by Nina Simone), as well as numbers by Muddy Waters, Tony Bennett, Robert Johnson, and B.B. King. Shaiman centers much of the score on dark tonal colors, using bass registers, piano, and drones, making it startling, and sometimes scary, when he breaks out into something brighter and peppier. Shaiman fans expecting something more along the lines of his Addams Family scores will certainly be disappointed; others will find great rewards in this score -- it has a meditative beauty that transcends the movie for which it was composed. ~ Steven McDonald, All Music Guide
