    All Music Guide Review

This volume in the compilation series from longtime oldies DJ Dick Bartley does justice to the word "collector." While a couple of the cuts are predictable oldies staples ("Tell It Like It Is," "Oh How Happy"), many are bona fide obscurities, perfect for the ambitious rock archivist: these are songs one rarely hears on oldies radio, not even Bartley's own show. Standout cuts include the Turtles' underappreciated "She's My Girl," the grooving "Baby Come Back" (featuring a young Eddy Grant on guitar for the Equals), and the Royalettes' "It's Gonna Take a Miracle" (later made a hit by Deniece Williams). There's not a lot of sonic consistency in going from the bubblegummy "You've Got to Be Loved" to the hokey-drug vibe of "Hot Smoke & Sassafras," but the set as a whole foreshadows the full-blown psychedelia and album rock to come. As a collection of disparate singles that crawled to the middle regions of the charts between 1965 and 1969, this album satisfies its "hard to find" mission nicely for those who either have great memories or want to know what they've missed. ~ Joseph McCombs, All Music Guide
