All Music Guide Review
A complete collection from the Marcels' most fruitful recording period -- 1961 to 1963 on Colpix Records -- that ranges from their debut blaster, "Blue Moon," which went to number one pop and R&B, to "Last Kiss," their final Colpix single. The 38 tracks feature some "Blue Moon" juniors and wannabes as well as some smacking good early-'60s R&B sounds. The original group does 18 tracks; the rest includes varying substitutes, but casual fans won't discern much difference. The Pittsburgh natives recorded exciting music. Many think of them as a '50s doo wop group, but their first single came out in 1961. A '50s influence, however, is quite evident in their vocal approach. While there are too many pleasing cuts to single out, some primes include: "Heartaches," a number seven pop hit; "My Melancholy Baby"; the Moonglows' "Most of All"; "Over the Rainbow"; and "Sweet Was the Wine." ~ Andrew Hamilton, All Music Guide
