Lyrics from Prelude Deep Grooves
All Music Guide Review
A British CD compilation pieced together in 1993, Deep Grooves functions effectively as a succinct summation of Prelude's influential contribution to electronic dance music, bridging the gap between disco and garage/house. While the tracks aren't sequenced chronologically, the liner notes do provide dates, allowing the listener to map out the New York label's evolution from Sine's "Just Let Me Do My Thing" from 1977 to Unique's "What I Got Is What You Need" from 1983. Along the way, the sounds get increasingly reliant on synthesizers rather than traditional instrumentation, alluding to the rise of electronic dance music. It's hard to pinpoint exact highlights on the album, since every song here was an underground anthem and few crossed over to mainstream success. Strictly from an aesthetic standpoint, Saturday Night Band's "Come on Dance, Dance" may be the best song here while Hi-Gloss' "You'll Never Know" is the album's most poetic moment, a true disco ballad. True to the spirit of Prelude, each of the songs feature prominent use of female diva vocals that tend to focus on various romantic themes, peaking during the uplifting choruses. In fact, little electronic dance music was ever able to duplicate the Prelude sound, which didn't follow a specific musical template in terms of specific sounds and was highly reliant on its verse-chorus-verse vocals to carry the weight of the song. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide
