GNP Crescendo's Divas of Pop collection compiles 16 hits from the '60s, '70s, and '80s from the "Divas" who put them on the map. All in all, it's a pretty good spread, with icons like Dolly Parton ("9 to 5") and Aretha Franklin ("Spanish Harlem") rubbing shoulder pads with post-"new wavers" like the Go-Go's ("We Got the Beat"), Blondie ("Heart of Glass"), and Quarterflash ("Harden My Heart"). Toss in a little Dionne Warwick, Judy Collins, and Carly Simon and you've got yourself a decent outline of women in popular music in the late 20th century, though swapping out Bananarama's "Don't Sleep in the Subway" with the superior "Cruel Summer" would have made the end results a tad sweeter. ~ James Christopher Monger, All Music Guide
