    All Music Guide Review

In Defense Of Animals 2 collects songs from animal rights-conscious acts like Meat Beat Manifesto, Alice Donut and Mike Watt. The compilation features electronica tracks like Moby's "Let's Go Free (Live 95), the Chemical Brothers' "Chemical Beats" and the Orb's "Slug Dub," and hip-hop like KRS-One's "Truth" and the Beastie Boys' "Son Of Neckbone." Ruby's "Tiny Meat," PJ Harvey's "Me-Jane," Bjork's "Enjoy" and Belly's "Spaceman" add a strong feminine presence to the album, and the track from Aleka's Attic, "Note To A Friend," is one of the few recordings by River Phoenix's band. Tracks from Morphine, White Zombie and Massive Attack round out this diverse and socially-minded compilation, which also works well as a portrait of mid-'90s alternative music. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
