Taking the broad and encompassing nature of rock to its extreme, Collectables' History of Rock, Vols. 1-10 box set includes examples of soul, surf, R&B, vocal pop, doo wop, country, girl groups, and other styles among its ten CDs. All of the selections were pop hits at one time and were either influences on or influenced by rock, but somehow fail to meet the historical and, well, rock context the name implies. Each volume has 14 randomly selected tracks that seem more like mix tapes than a professional collections. Still, when just one track from a group will do, comps such as this are just the thing to fill a hole in a collection. While Collectables has been notorious in the past for substandard sound, the tracks on History of Rock sound surprisingly clear. The entire box may be overkill for anyone not stocking a restaurant jukebox; fortunately, Collectables also sells each volume individually. ~ Wade Kergan, All Music Guide
