    All Music Guide Review

This is the third and presumably final volume in Sundazed Music's essential Psychedelic Microdots series -- featuring rare and distinctly underappreciated, mind-altering garage rockers. This installment -- which bears the parenthetical moniker "My Rainbow Life" -- contains one and a half dozen trippy tracks and seminal hardcore D.I.Y. and punky precursors. However, contrasting a majority of other similar compilations, producer Bob Irwin has painstakingly located and spiffed up the master tapes for a clarity and sonic insight that is practically unheard of when dealing with such obscure and ephemeral rock & roll. A majority of the tracks on this installment are related to the Roulette Records label and its associate subsidiaries. The accompanying 12-page liner-notes booklet relates all the pertinent details. Although the vast majority of the artists featured on this compendium are the antithesis of household names or hitmakers, their respective contributions to proto-punk and psychedelic pop are in many ways greater than their Top 40 labelmates -- such as Tommy James & the Shondells. Stylistically, "My Rainbow Life" covers a tremendous spectrum, ranging from the dark and foreboding "I'm Five Years Ahead of My Time" and title cut "Rainbow Life" from the Third Bardo to the Choir's up-tempo R&B-tinged "I'm Going Home" and the Beaten Path's reworking of the Leaves' "Dr. Stone." The latter track is of additional note, as it is one of the few cover tunes featured, with the Stillroven's aggressive pop mannerisms on the genre-defining anthem "Hey Joe." With the barrage of similar various-artist releases that seemingly glut CD bins, it bears repeating that all three volumes of Psychedelic Microdots are not only perfect primers for enthusiasts of '60s psych-pop, but sport superior sound, copious eye candy, related bio and discographical information. ~ Lindsay Planer, All Music Guide
