Packaged to look like an old K-Tel compilation, Super Fantastic Mega Smash Hits! is a collection of alternative artists singing '70s pop classics with their tongues placed firmly in cheek. Highlights include Vic Chestnut's surprisingly powerful rendition of Vicki Lawrence's "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" and Rex Daisy's amiable cover of John Sebastian's "Welcome Back." Some tracks wear out their welcome early: Poster Children's version of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" is just as cloying as the original while Bo Bud Greene's attempt at "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" is annoying in a way Elton John and Kiki Dee's version never was. While most of the performers on Super Fantastic Mega Smash Hits! lace their performance with more than a little irony, they take their work seriously enough to breathe new life into some familiar tracks. ~ Jon Azpiri, All Music Guide
