Released by the in-house label of famed London techno emporium Eukatech, this compilation chooses tracks by 11 of Europe's most well-known and not so well-known producers of twisted techno, including Steve Stoll, Si Begg, and Håkan Lidbo. And while these artists are revered for their dancefloor devastation, Eukatech selected milder cuts that make up for a lack in body-shaking assault with trippy ambience and deeply funky grooves. Begg's opener, "Starter for 400," is the perfect example, threatening to build into a stormer of a track, if only the wildly pitching tones and clattering percussion would allow the kick drum to break through. Pleasantly, the beat never really drops, allowing for the teasing and testing to continue throughout the remainder of the disc. Electro beats are the exception to the rule, with Mr. Velcro Fastener's remix of Hardfloor's "Skill Shot" and Gallen's "Screen Catcher" each achieving party velocity. But even these cuts would be on the softer side of typical club-night excitement. These strangely subdued takes on usually thunderous techno allow for enjoyable side-room listening without sacrificing any of the calliope of otherworldly sounds that make techno so appealing to begin with. ~ Joshua Glazer, All Music Guide
