Throughout 2002, the dance music archivists at France's Tigersushi (www.tigersushi.com) began releasing split 12" singles through their own label. Each installment in the series, titled More GDM, featured a new exclusive track backed by an unearthed rarity known and loved by few more than the Tigersushi brain trust (dig the spoofs of Talking Heads and Kraftwerk record sleeves, too). Near the end of the year, the tracks were compiled onto this like-named disc. The territories of dance music covered by the Tigersushi website roam wide and far, and More GDM reflects that, dipping its feet in post-punk, new wave, Krautrock, several stripes of house, and more. One track that they should be thanked for resurrecting is Material's disco (not) disco-era "Secret Life," a charging collision of thick basslines, pointy synthesizers, and squealing funk guitars. Tokow Boys and Bush Tetras represent the jerky ends of new wave and post-punk; the former's "Swinging Pool" is a pop song that's as chirpy as it is jerky, while the latter's "Things That Go Boom in the Night" -- somewhere between the Birthday Party and the Gun Club -- whips up a noisy snarl. Max Berlin's "Elle Et Moi," a Gainsbourg-gone-blaxploitation sleaze-fest, and Gina X Performance's "No GDM," a strutting electroclash precursor, also highlight the oldies. From the younger stable, the high points include a disorientingly windswept and rather abstract track from Maurice Fulton ("Feel the Same"), a dubby tech-house production from John Tejada ("Present Pretense"), and a "Sharevari"-sampling Metro Area track centered on a keyboard pattern that's alarmingly simple. Perhaps more than any other compilation in recent memory, the reach of More GDM lays out several styles and shows how each of them are related. In the process, there's some excellent music to listen to while charting the paths in your head. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
