Klaus Badelt's score for the CIA thriller The Recruit has an appropriately chilly, paranoid feel, thanks to its subdued electronic and string-driven arrangements. Pieces such as "CIA Training," "Lie Detector," and "Spartacus" keep the tension mounting in surprisingly restrained ways, while tracks like "You're Going to Langley" and "Talking Over Crabs" add some warmth to the score without detracting from its muted feel. Indeed, the seven-minute-long "A Bug for Breakfast" is the score's main intense, pulse-pounding piece of music, which is unusual for the soundtrack to this kind of movie. That's a compliment, however -- The Recruit is such a well-crafted, intelligent score that it lent the actual film more restraint and credibility than it would have had without this music. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
