Lyrics from Doo-Wop Archives
All Music Guide Review
Today it is rare for major labels (BMG, in this instance) to issue collector-oriented releases, but Doo-Wop Archives is a welcome exception. This 18-track compilation of doo wop hits and rarities from 1953-1964 (in stereo!) has a few major hits, but also many minor chart items and non-charting obscurities. A few of the most famous cuts are the Jive Five's chart-topping R&B hit "My True Story," Jimmy Charles' "A Million to One," and Maxine Brown's "Funny." The rarities include early cuts by known groups such as the Flamingos and a few sides by obscure acts like the Execs, with an emphasis on ballads throughout. The anthology's draw, apart from the hits, is the brilliant stereo remastering by Walter DeVenne and the array of independent label doo wop sides, many of which are otherwise hard to come by. Although it does not bear a volume number, Doo-Wop Archives is promised to be the first in a series. ~ Greg Adams, All Music Guide
