All Music Guide Review

Before 18 Wheeler recorded their debut album Year Zero, the band shifted away from their traditionalist power-pop roots toward a more dance-oriented direction, largely because they had been criticized by various journalists, as well as their labelmate Noel Gallagher, for being too similar to Big Star and the Beach Boys. As a result, Year Zero is an awkward record with predictable beats and fitfully engaging melodies, neither of which will please a dance or power-pop audience. The production would be alone to make the record a disappointment, but the songs themselves are frequently unassured and often derivative, which would be more endearing in a conventional setting. As it stands, Year Zero is a cautious and unimpressive debut. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
