Does it count as a cash-in attempt if there's a disclaimer ("This is just a fad") on the cover? Electro Kills may be a just-in-time electro/pop compilation from a label (Nettwerk) with few sympathetic acts under its umbrella, but some deeply tuned-in licensing and compiling results in a disc worth its salt for music fans as well as those conscious only of style and fashion. Respected Dutch or British labels like Clone and Output furnish a few incredible productions, stark and rumbling synth monsters like the openers, Lolita Strap's "Product" (neo-postmodern subtext: give in to consumer culture) and Black Strobe's "Me & Madonna" (neo-postmodern subtext: fatalistic hero worship, possibly tongue-in-cheek, from afar). A crunchy guitar reworking of Fischerspooner is the first of several electroclash pop hits, also including most-likely tracks from Codec & Flexor, Felix da Housecat (courtesy of a remix by Les Rythmes Digitales' Jacques Lu Cont), Ladytron, and FC Kahuna. The tracks are dark, the vocals heavily inflected but practically emotionless, and, unlike the raft of electroclash compilations available, most of the music is worth the effort of listening (one notable exception: the pathetic, sleazy-cool-guy droolings of Mount Sims). ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
