None of the 45s collected on Soul Gems was more than a regional hit, but these rare independent productions have a raw, driving sound that is well worth checking out, particularly for fans of hard soul. Highlights include "The Skunk (Pt. 1 & 2)" by the Dynatones, "Charles' Shing a Ling" by Charles Hodges, and Chevrone Scott's "I'm Moving On." Also noteworthy are "Baby, Don't Do It" (not the Holland-Dozier-Holland song first recorded by Marvin Gaye) by the Casinos and the gritty, two-part "Funky, Funky Horse" by Lester Young (no, not the famous tenor saxman) and the Playboys, which works the same sort of greasy Stax soul groove that Booker T. & the MG's made famous. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
