Lyrics from Old Master
All Music Guide Review
Old Master was Red Foley's last solo album before his death. None of the songs were hits and, in fact, Foley hadn't had a solo hit in nearly a decade at the time the album was made. The songs are a mixture of old and new, from classics like "South" and "Hang Your Head in Shame," to a pair of good Mel Tillis/Wayne Walker compositions. The second side of the album is heavy on ballads that allow Foley to exercise his ability as a country crooner with a Bing Crosby influence. In the late '60s, Foley, like his labelmate Webb Pierce, sounded like he was stuck in a time warp where his music would always sound the same no matter what was happening around him, but his ability and familiarity ensured a reliable product. ~ Greg Adams, All Music Guide
