    All Music Guide Review

Art Hodes originally recorded the 15 tracks heard on this Delmark CD for Euphonic during a marathon session in 1978, though only two songs heard on this release were ever issued by the latter label. It's hard to understand why they were ignored, as the then 73-year-old pianist's blues-drenched style and strong left hand make for a memorable studio date, covering infrequently performed songs like "Jackass Blues" and "Chimes Blues" (both of which are associated with King Oliver), as well as very familiar traditional jazz fare like "St. James Infirmary," "Tin Roof Blues," and "Royal Garden Blues." His strident take of Fats Waller's "Blue Turning Grey Over You" and Duke Ellington's "The Mooche" are also delightful. This 2001 release is a welcome addition to the late pianist's legacy. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
