    All Music Guide Review

A good collection of authentic boogie-woogie pianists must include the holy trinity -- Albert Ammons, Meade "Lux" Lewis, and Pete Johnson. They are here, but not identified on the individual tracks, which is unnecessarily irritating. One assumes they split the initial ten to 16 selections equally, but you can't specify visually in the "credits," and won't unless you are an aficionado (in which case you own these sessions already) or have an expert nearby. Clearly, "Pinetop's Boogie Woogie" and "Yancey's Getaway" are done by Pinetop Smith (listed on the front cover as Pinetop Smiths) and Jimmy Yancey, respectively, and surely they do play more than one tune. But with the lack of documentation, one never knows for sure, do one? ~ Michael G. Nastos, All Music Guide
