    All Music Guide Review

The 2003 edition of AthFest continues the aims of the Athens, GA annual Summer Music and Arts Festival to showcase its thriving and diverse music community. Beginning with the wiry post-punk of Paper Lions' "He Commands Commandments," the set flows easily into "This Quiet Hell," a bold, '90s-style indie rock jam from Jet by Day. But that's the most upbeat material for a while, as roots and Americana influences shade largely acoustic numbers from Park Bench Trio (the dusky "Flat on My Back"), Julie Powell, Viva, and the perennial genius Vic Chesnutt. The Ones jangle things up with "She's Made Well," a fun indie pop track with darting percussion and swooping intersecting melodies, while local math rockers Maserati turn in the busy instrumental "Keep It Gold." Best might be Jack Logan and Bob Kimbell's spacey, melancholy take on the Hank Williams gem "Singing Waterfall." ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide
