David Bowie's ample talents as a songwriter are sometimes overlooked due to his theatricality and ever-changing persona, which is what makes Crash Course for the Ravers: A Tribute to the Songs of David Bowie a good idea. Indie-rock artists included here are Mercury Rev, the Dambuilders, Swell, Quasi, Hazel, Golden Delicious, King Black Acid, Fernando, J. Hell, Spurge, the Magnetic Fields, Ventilator, Capsize 7, and the Treepeople. There are a wide variety of musical styles present; some bands stay close to Bowie's original versions, while others offer their own reinterpretations. Some tracks work better than others, but the album as a whole confirms Bowie's songwriting talent for any who might still doubt it. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
