Lyrics from Soul Tribute to the Beatles
All Music Guide Review
There have been jazz and classical renditions of the Beatles songbook, yet Vanguard Records has compiled a soul tribute, consisting of vocal-based songs by Fats Domino, the Supremes, and others. The producers waded through the vaults of soul music to consummate this generally affable program. However, Soul Tribute to the Beatles might also be viewed upon as an outlet to generate a quick buck. Regardless, the listener will be treated to an assortment of nicely envisioned works such as Wilson Pickett's soul/funk spin on "Hey Jude" and Aretha Franklin's pop-gospel take on "Let It Be." Other highlights include Esther Phillips' whispery interpretation of "And I Love Her," complete with lush strings and flutes. Earth, Wind & Fire's snazzy, brass-heavy rendering of "Got to Get You Into My Life" is an adrenaline enhancer, whereas the Four Tops' soft, hush-toned treatment of "Michelle" might prompt the listener to shed a tear or two. In general, Soul Tribute to the Beatles offers yet another perspective to the Beatles' ongoing legacy. ~ Glenn Astarita, All Music Guide
