All Music Guide Review

The dance date David Carroll proposes isn't a sock hop -- his music is quirky orchestral pop, mostly instrumental, better suited to more formal affairs. Carroll has been included on lounge compilations, but at this early stage his style is closer to the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra but with a steady dance beat. The one vocal number, "Stomp and Whistle," really swings and is very different from the rest of the album. Whimsical compositions like Jelly Roll Morton's "Grandpa's Rocker" and "Jug Time" (actually "Little Brown Jug") serve as springboards for his inventive arrangements, which are so lighthearted they sometimes sound like cartoon music. Bachelors seeking fodder for their hi-fis will prefer Carroll's '60s albums, but those who appreciate the ambitious orchestral pop of the '50s will enjoy Dance Date. ~ Greg Adams, All Music Guide
